From the supplier: Small and middle-sized business enterprises spent 65% of their net earnings to pay for employee health care programs in 1991, compared to 38% spent by companies with more than 1,000 employees. A Johnson and Higgins study of employee health care costs of 1,144 mid-sized companies reported that employee health care costs rose 9% to $3,865 per employee in 1992 after a 15.2% rise in 1991. Greater use of managed care programs, including preferred provider organizations and health management organizations, was responsible for slowing cost increase percentages in 1992.
